NK: ご自身の肩書きを、どのように表現されますか？
would you describe yourself ?
JG:
I like the term ‘sake evangelist’, because I do a lot of
things between writing and seminars and things like that,
and they are all focused on making sake popular overseas. I
try and make my work accessible to people who don’t know
anything about sake, whilst keeping it interesting to those
who do already know a lot.
NK: How
do you reach all these people?
JG: 「日本酒伝道師」という名称が好きです。大半は執筆業と講演業
を多くしているけれど、それら全て、海外での日本酒の啓蒙につなが
る活動。日本酒のことを全く知らない人にも分かりやすく、同時に日
本酒を多く知る人にも興味深い内容になるよう工夫しています。
NK: 幅広い層の方々にどのようにアプローチするのですか？
JG: 私はアメリカ向けの小さな日本酒の輸出会社を経営持っていて、

: I have a small export company in Japan that exports
to the US – 13 brands. I run sake educational programmes
– two levels of that. There are about 1200 people who have
now completed the three-day intensive sake course
そこで１３の銘柄を紹介している。また日本酒の教育プログラムを
２つのレベルに渡り運営し、 これまで1,200名の参加者に3日間の上
級講座を受けてもらいました。

The third pillar is writing – I do a lot of writing in my
newsletter which is great because I can write very freely.
There is also the ‘Sake Today’ magazine which is both fun
and a big challenge.
What brought you into the sake world? You came to
Japan with the JET program and became introduced to the
sake, but it can’t have been that simple…
NK:
JG: :
The most important thing is that I didn’t choose sake as
a conscious path, it chose me. Eventually I took a proactive
action, but Japan Times asked me to write a sake column
and then a book company approached me to publish. I
never set out to work in the sake world.

NK: 日本酒の世界に足を踏み込んだきっかけはありますか？JETプロ
グラムの一環で日本酒を知ったと聞きましたが、そんなにシンプル
だったんですか？
JG: 重要なことは、自ら日本酒の道に進もうと思ったことはないと
いうことなのです。日本酒が私を選んだ。 まずジャパンタイムス紙
から日本酒のコラムを書いて欲しいと頼まれて、前向きに引き受け
ました。そしたら出版社からも日本酒の本の出版をとの声がかかっ
て。しかし日本酒の世界で食べてと決めて動いたことは一度もない
んです。
