WHO ARE THE SAKE SAMURAI?
Although a voluntary effort, launching the sake section from
scratch has been a challenge. Rie organised a lot of the new
sake section single-handedly, such as setting up the categories
and the judging criteria, deciding on the selection of judges
and spreading the PR message to increase visibility. On top
of this, she worked to win over Japanese breweries who were
uncomfortable at first with entering an overseas competition.
Her work has paid off, as this year there were 876 brand
entries, which is the most ever received. By contrast, there
were only 200 brands when she started in 2007.
完全なボランティアーで請け負ったこの任務だったが、同部門のロ
ーンチは苦労の連続だったと理恵さんは言う。何しろゼロの状態で

こうして苦心して振興した日本酒部門は、着実に日本酒業界に変
革をもたらしている。IWCが日本酒を審査するうえでの最大の特徴
The Japanese sake category is now steadily changing the
Japanese sake industry. The biggest feature when the IWC
evaluates Japanese sake is that half of the judges are not
Japanese. Rie points out that non-Japanese people have a
different point of view about sake compared to Japanese
people - so their judgment is different. For example, as a simple
example, non-Japanese people often prefer brands similar to
New World wines that are more fragrant. However, in the
case of Japanese judges, their judgment is often influenced by
the traditional evaluation method in Japan. These judges tend
to notice and reward traditional sake. The Japanese judges

in annual brand winners who are often quite different to the
ones that are awarded in Japan.
