Special Film Screening : My Perestroika with director Robin Hessman

The award-winning documentary My Perestroika follows five ordinary Russians from their sheltered Soviet childhood , through the collapse of the Soviet Union , to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia . First person testimony , verité news footage , personal photos and home movies paint an intimate and complex picture of the dreams and disillusionment of those raised behind the Iron Curtain . The film is essential to understanding Russia as it was , is and might become .
Director Robin Hessman will be present to outline the historical framework of the Perestroika period , talk about the making of the film , and lead a Q & A discussion . Robin is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker who has lived and worked in Russia and the U . S . She is an Associate at Harvard University ’ s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies , and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations .

From the Vault : Icons of Ethiopia

The lands of Ethiopia have an ancient and storied history that is explored in this pop-up exhibit . It is the fabled Land of Punt – God ’ s Land , and the kingdom of the legendary Queen of Sheba . Orthodoxy spread to Ethiopia through the Coptic Church of Egypt , and throughout the centuries they developed their own traditions and a unique style of iconography that uses a bright but limited color palette .

Artist Amy Fagin of 20th Century Illuminations will present a travelogue of her multiple trips to Ethiopia , with a focus on the amazing history of manuscript illumination , an important art form in Ethiopian culture .

Talk & Book Signing with Russian Literary Translator Lisa Hayden

Lisa Hayden won a 2014-2016 Read Russia Translation Prize for her translation of Eugene Vodolazkin ’ s extraordinary novel Laurus , a spiritual and historical odyssey about a medieval doctor , pilgrim , and holy fool .
Hayden will discuss her approach to literary translation , and describe the particular challenges of translating the remarkably rich panoply of language in Laurus . She will be signing copies of the book , which will be available for sale in the Museum Shop .
