Museum of Russian Icons 2017 Fall Newsletter Volume 6 | Page 6
In August the Museum announced the
appointment of Dr. Wendy Salmond
as editor of the Journal of Icon Studies.
Dr. Salmond is a tenured Professor
of Art History at Chapman University
in Orange, California, specializing in
Russian art of the 19th and early 20th
centuries; decorative arts and design
history; icon painting; early Soviet visual
culture; and European modernism.
The Journal of Icon Studies is the only
publication in the United States that
specializes in presenting research
in the field of iconology. It provides
the opportunity for the academic
community to share and explore ideas
concerning the relationship of the icon
to broadly associated scholarly interests.
The Journal has an international
editorial panel that peer-reviews
submitted articles and will be
supporting the broader direction that
Dr. Salmond will be taking.
Dr. Salmond’s first major project
will be collaborating with the British
Museum to edit and publish their
online icon catalog—an opportunity
that will bring the prestige of the
British Museum to the Journal of Icon
Studies.

Dr. Salmond’s publications include
Arts and Crafts in Imperial Russia,

Tradition and Transition: Russian
Icons in the Age of the Romanovs, as
well as numerous exhibition catalogs,

social and art historical topics for
a wide range of audiences. She has

with a number of exhibitions
exploring Russian culture.
I look forward to the

the Journal’s profile into
broader related areas.

Museum Receives
Mass Humanities
Grant
The Museum has received a $7,500 grant
from Mass Humanities to revise and
enhance our audio guide and mobile
app content. The grant will allow the
Museum to research and write new
content about the collection, and
will fund professional fees for voice
talent, sound editing, and translation
into Russian, French, Spanish, and
Portuguese. Dr. Wendy Salmond,
Professor of Art and Art History at
Chapman University in California and
a specialist in Russian art, will serve as
the humanities scholar advisor to the
project. The grant period runs from
July 15, 2017 to June 30, 2018, and will
be matched by the Museum through
cost sharing. While some of the current
audio content will be retained, the grant
allows the Museum to expand the audio
guide and provide a greater depth of
information, significantly enriching the
educational experience of audio guide
users.

A powerful French film set in the late Soviet era about dissidents and refuseniks—
Jews harassed by the state for wanting to emigrate—and two young French people
who go behind the Iron Curtain to try to help. They discover an unknown world,
brutal and absurd, and quickly realize they are in over their heads with this
clandestine and dangerous mission.
This film was featured at the Boston Jewish Film Festival 2016, and BJFF Artistic
Director Ariana Cohen-Halberstam, will be present to introduce the film and lead a
discussion.
