YES, for some sports, NO for others. Events that are extremely long in duration, ultra-distance running for example is a sport in which fat utilisation can provide performance benefits, whereas power based sports such as sprinting, jumping and Olympic lifting etc. rely on a different energy pathway than what fat provides.
