increasing your lean mass also helps
reduce your body fat as it is metabolically-
active tissue that burns calories for much
longer. I always incorporate some form of
strength training when I train with weights
every morning. I also enjoy the stepper. I
usually do 45 minutes every evening after
work. I love challenging myself and beating
my previous records.
What do people do in the gym that really
ticks you off?
When I’m doing glute exercises or hip
thrusts and a ‘creeper’ stares at me. It is
even worse if a ‘creeper’ stares at you from
the mirror. Yes, I still see you! I also hate
it when people have every barbell and
dumbbell you can think of around their
bench when they train.
When it comes to the opposite sex, what is
your weakness?
Traps. A smile helps, too. V-neck shirts are
also a bonus!
What would you describe as romantic?
Watching a sunset on a blanket anywhere
with a beautiful view. Also, a bottle of red
wine with some great food. Sushi is a must
along with snacks like biltong and mini
flavoured rice cakes.
“Never stop believing
you will make it!”
When do you feel physically at your
strongest ?
I train with weights in the mornings, but by
the afternoon I’m ready to smash a cardio
session! As a graphic designer I don’t move a
lot, except from my desk to the fridge to eat.
What do you eat?
I frequently change my diet according to
what I look like. For example, I would start
my day with 50g of oats, 3 egg whites and a
cup of black coffee. My post-workout meal
consists of 30g Rice Krispies and whey,
which helps my body restore its energy. I
would usually eat 35g of protein of my choice
two to three times a day. I also include some
almonds, rice cakes and peanut butter as
snacks between meals. I enjoy chicken,
but would sometimes swop it for ostrich or
hake. I also eat 60g of vegetables, either in
the form of a stir-fry mix or green beans. My
carbs include sweet potatoes or rice, but I
keep them to a minimum. Once in a while I
have a slight peanut butter problem. I won’t
tell you how much I have, though, because I
might get into trouble!
Do you strength train?
Yes, I believe in strength training because
it helps you to build lean muscle, and
What is your most
prized possession?
My phone. Not because
I am particularly
materialistic, but
because it is the one
device that holds all my memories.
What would you still like to achieve?
For now I’m taking things as they come, but
I would love to see the full extent of what
my body is capable of. It has always been
one of my goals to push myself and to go
to that next level.
Any famous last words?
Do what makes you happy. Sometimes
it’s not about being the strongest or the
fittest or the leanest. I can assure you that
someone who is the “fittest and leanest” is
going through their own struggles. The only
competition you need to worry about is the
person in the mirror. I think it’s a horrible
thing to get to the point where you look
in the mirror and don’t like what you see
anymore, instead of seeing how incredibly
amazing you are and what you can
achieve. If you are not happy then make
some life choices to get you back to the
point where you have that spring back in
your step and that beautiful smile on your
face. There is something magical about
watching your body change and to learn
your personal strengths and weaknesses.
Don’t be quick to judge others, and never
be too hard on yourself. M.E
