HEALTHY MEALS TO YOUR DOOR
With the growing culture of working longer hours people are depending on companies offering daily healthy meals of great value which are then delivered to their door . In a climate where nutritious food is becoming increasingly fashionable clients can even consult with nutritionists before signing up on a special healthy meal plan .
A GOLDEN RULE IS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU EAT ANYTHING : “ WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO IT ? HOW MANY INGREDIENTS DOES IT CONTAIN ?” added during the processing of foods . This includes sugars , sweeteners , and naturally-occurring sugars that are isolated from whole food and concentrated so that the sugar component is the primary ingredient , such as fruit juice concentrates as well as syrups .
Approximately 50 percent of people ' s main sugar consumption comes from sugar-sweetened beverages such as fruit juices , soft drinks , sports and energy drinks . These beverages are absorbed very quickly into the bloodstream which spike blood sugar levels . Scientific studies have even found that artificial “ sugar-free ” sweeteners seem to have a damaging effect on the body . Just because it is sugar-free does not necessarily mean it is healthier .
WHAT IS ATHEROSCLEROSIS ?
The hardening and narrowing of arteries , which causes , according to the 2015 Lancet Global Burden of Disease Report , an average of 56 million deaths each year around the world . Atherosclerosis begins with damage to the cellular lining of arteries that keeps vessels toned and smooth and maintains blood flow . Contributing factors to this condition are high levels of blood cholesterol and high blood pressure . The resulting damage in the body leads to plaque accumulation in arteries .

DISPUTING SATURATED FAT

Nutritionists recommend a diet low in saturated fats , the animal-based fats found in chicken , beef , pork , butter and cheese , among other foods . This advice has now been disputed by some cardiologists who believe saturated fat in itself is not the main problem . They say that people can reduce the risk of

ACID REFLUX

World-renowned ear , nose and throat specialist Dr . Jonathan Aviv points out in his new book , The Acid Watcher Diet , people often don ' t realise symptoms beyond heartburn can be linked to acid reflux . These include symptoms such as a lump-like sensation in the throat that causes difficulty in swallowing as well as a sore throat and a chronic cough .
“ Many commercially produced foods and drinks are treated with acid-containing substances to enhance flavour and shelf life ,” says Aviv , who , in his book , suggests a diet consisting of natural unprocessed foods , especially those high in lean protein such as fish , chicken and egg whites , along with low-fat dairy and beans , combined with whole grains and non-acidic fruits and vegetables . coronary heart disease simply by walking 22 minutes a day , minimising stress and eating “ real food ”.
Critics have raised questions about the merits of this view , noting that it is not based on any new research and that decades of research have shown that a diet rich in saturated fat increases bad LDL cholesterol in your blood , which puts you at greater risk of a heart attack or stroke . They still recommend people eat more unsaturated fats found in plant-based foods such as nuts , fish , seeds and olives than both saturated and trans fats commonly found in convenience foods .
The more processed a food is , the more acidic it is due to the chemicals used to preserve it . It is not manufactured to feed people , but to temporarily and inadequately comfort them . As such , not only will it compromise performance in the gym , but it will , over the long haul , also lead to the development of coronary heart disease , bone and joint issues , fatty liver disease , diabetes mellitus and a host of other ailments . The consumption of processed foods can also lead to atherosclerosis , which is linked to cardiovascular disease .
Although dietary acid is helpful to break down the foods people consume , it becomes problematic when stomach acid comes back up into the oesophagus . Chemicals used in food processing have the physiologic effect of loosening the lower oesophageal sphincter , a muscle that protects the oesophagus from the stomach .
There are common foods people eat that are not especially acidic , but also loosen the muscle . These are chocolate , caffeine , alcohol , mint , onion and garlic .
According to Aviv , oesophageal cancer is on the rise : “ If we don ’ t do something , oesophageal ( cancer ) will exceed colon cancer as the second most common cancer killer .” Aviv recommends that the intervention of a specialist is needed if chronic throat symptoms don ' t go away after eight weeks .
