THE OXFORD DICTIONARY DESCRIBES
A BODYBUILDER AS “A PERSON WHO
STRENGTHENS AND ENLARGES THE
MUSCLES OF THEIR BODY THROUGH
STRENUOUS EXERCISE”. NOW, ANY PERSON
READING THIS MAGAZINE KNOWS THAT
THIS IS HIGHLY SIMPLIFIED AND ONLY
THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG.
I
n fact, it’s not even true. At the
very least the definition should
read “a person who strengthens
and enlarges the muscles of
their body through strenuous
exercise and meticulous
diet.” Now that we are being
sticklers for detail, that definition is
more accurate for a dedicated lifter
looking to get bigger, stay lean and
build a good body, not necessarily a
bodybuilder.
Bodybuilding is about all of
the above, and so much more.
Yes, size is obviously paramount
and fundamental, but it must be
measured against proportion,
symmetry, fullness and detail. When
genetics, size, proportion and
symmetry are equal, to be viewed
as an athlete with precision, the
difference is in the detail.
Those who are competitive
and train each day to create a
perfectly balanced physique
won’t forget the five, often
neglected, muscles that
will be discussed in this
article. These muscles may
be small but they make
a massive difference to
the overall picture of the
