FRONT N' CENTRE MULTISPORT MAGAZINE F R E E TO A G O O D H O M E Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Shane Smith BREAKING ALL THE RULES BY RACHAEL CHARLES I t has been my great privilege to step into the incredibly oversized shoes of Shane Smith for the May issue of Multisport Magazine. Between rolling out Super League Triathlon, assisting with the Mother’s Day classic and taming his facial hair, Shane has been jetting around Australia managing the operations of a multitude of exciting events for our sport. Multisport has been swept up in an exciting revamp in the past couple of months; the televised elite Super League Triathlon was, without a doubt, a game changer for the industry and has set the standard for all other events to strive. The upcoming Long Course Weekend in Jervis Bay turns the format of triathlon on its head and welcomes all walks of life to participate – from the seasoned career triathletes to the group of office workers that join in the 5km run (let’s face it, they’ll walk…). There truly is something for everyone. More than other elite sports, multisport has an overwhelming sense of community about it. The rivalry is there, but so too is the camaraderie. It’s amazing to see how welcoming that community is to newcomers, no matter their starting fitness or age. With this level of support, it’s no wonder we see athletes that started out struggling to collect the mail from a slightly inclined 10m driveway and end up smashing everyone’s expectations and stereotypes in elite events. This magazine pioneers the way in multisport, not only for the coverage of the main events, but for also discussing the topics that are considered ‘taboo’. Dealing with kids that are unwilling to continue their sporting journey, depression in great athletes, the need for support of family and friends in times of difficulty – these are the topics that need to be talked about in the sporting community, and Multisport Magazine is proud to incite such discussion. As we head into the traditional end of the multisport season, the wheels do not stop turning. Australia is going to play host to some truly revolutionary events within the next few years (not to mention the 2018 Commonwealth Games!) and if you aren’t up for participating, definitely make sure you score a front row seat.
