FRONT N' CENTRE MULTISPORT MAGAZINE F R E E TO A G O O D H O M E Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Shane Smith A NEW START BY SHANE SMITH I t has been almost 10 years since I have formally been involved with a magazine that covers the sport of triathlon and multisport events. Previously I have been the editor for magazines here in Australia and in the USA, gaining experience and knowledge from some of the best in the business including Sam Mitchell, Ross Copeland, TJ Murphy, Heather Gordon, Cam Elford and the irrepressible John Duke, the now publisher of LAVA magazine who I worked with at Triathlete USA. Along the way I worked for Ironman for over 15 years and have also led age group athletes to world championships and tours around the world including Challenge Roth. It has, since 2003 after I stopped racing, been my ‘calling’ to help athletes enjoy the multisport lifestyle. So, when previous owner of Multisport Magazine Natalie Kuhnemann and I caught up for a coffee one day, the idea of her passing the baton over to me became an appealing proposition. Natalie has created a great magazine that focuses on the ‘everyday athlete’ and has a strong following on the eastern seaboard of Australia. Natalie’s work ethic and passion could be seen in the pages of each issue over the past 5 years and I feel very honoured that our team of writers and designers will now nurture her ‘baby’. As a team we are aiming to build the profile of the magazine, showcase great events and work closely with our partners to allow the magazine to stay ‘free to a good home’ forever. Our first new-look edition highlights two iconic events, the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii and the Coolangatta Gold. Both have incredible history and are races that many of our readers aim to compete in. While in Hawaii I ran (actually swam) into my old friend Peter Reid, a 3-time winner of the Hawaii Ironman who was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, and I couldn’t think of a more worthy recipient. He inspired a generation of athletes during the 1990’s and set a standard that many tried to follow. I am not ashamed to say he was my hero and it is fantastic that he has now been recognised with the greats of triathlon. Until the next issue, train hard, very hard.
