TIME TO
CELEBRATE
BY ST E V E JAC KS O N
T
’is the season as they say. For some, the traditional holiday of
Christmas is a time for religious celebration, whilst for many it’s
a time of celebration, a reason to relax and party. The latter is a
practice supported by our new contributor, Dr Kate Gazzard who
strongly encourages some down time being scheduled into your normal
routine as well as some longer breaks throughout the year.
I’d expect the Christmas in the Don, Bozzone and Russell households will
be a little more significant, with all three elite male pros enjoying a return
to racing after all suffering life and career threatening injuries in the last
18 months. Terenzo Bozzone is the most recent returnee of the three. With
back-to-back wins at Western Sydney 70.3 and a phenomenal sub-8 hour
effort to win Ironman WA in Busselton following a nasty bike incident earlier
this year, this Christmas will hold a special significance. Tim Don’s story is
no less inspirational and was captured in a moving documentary ‘Man with
the Halo’ which you can see here. Matt Russell took a bit longer to return to
his peak, but as the father of a three-month old when his 2017 Kona tilt was
abruptly halted in a collision with a van on the bike leg, his return to finish
sixth there this year would have been even more satisfying.
Of course, we’ve all seen the stories in the news without the happy
endings too, so I encourage you to be grateful for the ability to hit the trails,
take the bike out, get in or on the water and return home to your loved
ones. I’d also encourage you to do what you can to maintain that routine
by practicing safe habits, educating friends and family in those habits and
showing some tolerance for those who, despite our best efforts, don’t want
to share their space or are unaware of our presence.
One of my learned friends in the nutrition industry has a distinct way of
explaining his product to groups. “You don’t give everyone a size 10 pair
of shoes, so why would you give them all the same nutrition strategy” and
this philosophy stands true in all aspects of what we do. Here at Multisport
Magazine, we’re going to provide you with information from an array of
high-quality sources, and some of them will be conflicting! But we’re keen to
provide you with this knowledge and ultimately you’ll need to sift through
and find what works for you; whether that’s nutrition, volume of training,
techniques, or apparel and equipment choices. It has been a pleasure to be
part of your journey to work out how you can be the best athlete you can be,
and I wish you all the best for the holidays and look forward to more fun in
2019.
