EXPOPEDIA2018 Northam, Limpopo Venue: Northam Rec Club Date: 10 May 2018 Time: 13:00 to 17:00 Exhibitors on standby ready to give information about their products at the exhibition. Visitors and exhibitors engaging at the Northam exhibition. Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine has been operational since 1993 and, despite the troubles it experienced in June 2016 with clashes between members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), the mine continues to operate at steady levels. It produces some 300 000oz of platinum each year and remains economical. Future production at Zondereinde mine is estimated to continue for the next 16 years. Underground mining activities at Zondereinde are focused on the Merensky and UG2 reefs, with shafts reaching an average depth of 1 750m. Hydro-powered equipment is used for stoping and development. Surface infrastructure at the complex includes concentrators for Merensky and UG2, a base metals removal plant and a smelter. Northam is also the site of one of South Africa’s most famous music festivals where, once a year in August, the province of Limpopo is rocked by music rather than mining activities.
