UCI XCO WORLD CUP EVENTS 2018 “I was just ready to race myself into the ground to see what I could do. Luckily, I could pass a few riders after the crash that slowed me up on the first lap. It’s amazing to have an event like this in South Africa, and to do well for my country.” – Wessel Botha, first South African home (19th place) Mariske was South Africa’s first Elite women to come in, in 28th place. She feels it was fate as her race number was 28, she started 28th and her hotel room number that week was 28! 2x U23 World Champ Sam Gaze picked his way through the pack, from his seeded 30th, to the front where he shadowed reigning World Champion Nino Schurter throughout the race, moving ahead in the final lap and taking the win in a tense sprint finish. “Winning that sprint, was just a moment of disbelief. I was starting to cramp with a lap and a half to go. I was just pushing my way through. As we got closer and closer to the finish I knew I had to be in front. I went for it as we came over the bridge and it came off. I was never sure, but it is just amazing. You always wish, but when it becomes reality, it is mind blowing.” – Sam Gaze 6-8 JULY Val Di Sole (Italy) Live on SuperSport 11 on 8 July (Elite Women 12pm, Elite Men 2.30pm)  valdisolebikeland.com/ 13-15 JULY Vallnord (Andorra) Live on SuperSport 8 on 15 July (Elite Women 12pm, Elite Men 2.30pm)  vallnordworldcup.com/ca/ 10-12 AUGUST Mont-Saint-Anne (Canada) Live on SuperSport 6 and 6A on 12 August (Elite Women 6pm, Elite Men 8.30pm)  velirium.com 24-26 AUGUST La Bresse (France) Live on SuperSport 6 and 6A on 26 August (Elite Women 12pm, Elite Men 2.30pm)  labresse- coupedumondemtb.com/ 'T ON M IS S T H @mariskestrauss “Something was clearly very funny after my race today! Super happy with my result especially after a crooked first lap being caught behind every crash humanly possible!” @jolandaneff “Sixth place today exactly six weeks after breaking my collarbone. Couldn‘t even dream about starting here, and looking at the reduced training I did the past few weeks, I‘m super happy to start my World Cup campaign like this. Caaan’t wait to take up my full training schedule soon!! First lesson will be: learn how to sprint.” 25-27 MAY Nove Mesto Na Morave (Czech) Live on SuperSport 2 on 27 May (Elite Women 11am, Elite Men 2pm)  mtbnmnm.com/en/ This year was Annika’s third World Cup opener win in a row.
