A journey along the
Absa Cape Epic route
We wish our Absa Cape Epic
participants all the best for
the 2019 race. Your discipline,
focus and preparation is an
inspiration to our nation to
step up and grow our economy
in the same way.
Did you know that over the 624
km of the Absa Cape Epic, the
average climb is only slightly
more than our best economic
growth rate of 2.5% since
2013? We all need to pedal
harder to raise productivity,
economic growth and to create
jobs.
Save water
While South Africa is one of the 30 driest countries in the world, Cape Town is
the world’s number one water-saving city, with residents consuming around
100 litres of water per day (compared to Gauteng at over 300 litres per day).
Businesses are encouraged to implement water-saving strategies, including
educating staff, fixing leaks, auditing consumption regularly, installing water-
efficient taps that can reduce consumption by 60%, converting to water-wise
landscaping and fitting pool covers to stop evaporation. In 2018, we invested
in a desalination plant, providing the city of Cape Town with water under
contract for a period of two years. Absa is committed to supporting the Public
Sector in making cities sustainable for the future.

Economic growth 2019
Following a cyclical trend, the South African economy
will stay under pressure and will only achieve an
economic growth rate of 2% by 2020. Higher economic
growth requires strong corporate and public governance
and greater policy certainty to strengthen business
confidence and attract foreign direct investment.
