NINO SCHURTER
The world’s best
mountain biker is
just on another level.
The unbeatable
biker can’t stop
winning (everything)
and we’re amped to see Nino attack
this year’s Absa Cape Epic. The super
focused 2018 Swiss Sportsman of the
Year chatted to us on p32 about his love
for riding and how he juggles family
time with his career. Plus, check out his
winning weapon on p38.
SEAMUS
ALLARDICE
Freelancer and
MTB staff writer
Seamus has
lucked into telling
tall tales about
mountain bikers, events and the gear
that keeps them going. When he’s not
testing new tech on his home trails near
Stellenbosch, you’ll find him on SA’s
gravel roads, feeding his new gravel
addiction. Follow his (mis)adventures on
Instagram @seamusallardice.
HANS REY
A regular contributor,
we wish we lived
the life of Hans “No
Way” Rey. Hans is a
proud member of the
Mountain Bike Hall
of Fame. When he isn’t roping with his
bike down skyscrapers or hopping over
cars in gridlocked LA traffic, he travels to
far-flung, exotic destinations to explore
the world – by bike of course. Ignoring
warnings of danger, he spent five days on
two wheels in historical Naples (p60).
HANNELE STEYN
As the only female
in the pride of four
Last Lions – a rider
to have completed
every Cape Epic to
date – Hannele is
rightly known as “The Lioness”. We can’t
help but be in awe of this superwoman,
still going strong at age 53. Find out more
about the Hannele Steyn Trophy (p98)
and why this accomplished athlete is
always smiling (p77).

NEIL GARDINER
Media consultant
Neil began cycling
competitively in
1987, leading him
to a stint racing in
Europe. Always a
passionate writer, he spent a decade as
an advertising copywriter, then turned
to writing and editing magazines and TV
features. He’s contributed to three books
on cycling and is also a commentator
at the Absa Cape Epic. He lives in Cape
Town with his wife and two children.
SYLVIA
LEIMGRUBER
As a native of
South Tyrol in Italy,
Sylvia has lived in
Innsbruck, Austria,
since completing
her studies in mathematics. She has
devoted herself to Vertriding in the alpine
mountains – the perfect combination
of experiencing the mountains she
loves while getting some exercise. Read
about Sylvia’s recent trip to the eastern
highlands of Zimbabwe on p130.
SPOOK & ERICA
GROENEWALD
Spook was Erica's
first coach and
sponsor. The two
got engaged at the
1997 Argus Cycle
Tour and married five weeks later, before
Erica headed overseas for racing season.
In 1999 they started Daisyway Coaching
(playing on Erica's love for daisies and her
ever-dazed look during training). Turn to
p124 for their bush mechanics advice –
you'll want to tear it out for safekeeping!

ANNIKA LANGVAD
Would you believe
us if we told you that
Annika used to be
a bartender? Two
beers please! The
über-talented Dane
opened up to us about many things,
including how she’s feeling about tackling
this year’s Absa Cape Epic for a five-in-
a-row win, as well as how she deals with
the pressure of being in the spotlight.
Check it out on p68.
