WHERE TO WATCH
STAGE 4
The short distance means there’s
less opportunity to gain a major
time advantage. However, mid-week
individual time trials have a way of
setting the tone for the remainder of
the race. Since it’s an individual eff ort,
without tactics or trade team politics
interfering, it’s the strongest team that
usually wins and a show of dominance
goes a long way to dismantling the
rest of the fi eld’s confi dence. Provided
Specialized Foundation have stayed
in good nick thus far, Gaze and
Hatherly have another good chance
at a win, but will be pushed hard
by SCOTT-SRAM and Cannondale
Factory Racing.
If all is going according to plan
for Investec-Songo-Specialized,
the win will surely go to them in the
women’s category. It’s highly likely
that Langvad and Van der Breggen
will hold the lead on GC, which means
they’ll start last. So they’ll not only
have Summit, Spur and Silverback
Fairtree’s time splits to aim for, they’ll
see them up ahead – a hare to chase.
Expect more time to be added to
their GC advantage.
MESSAGE FROM THE WESTERN CAPE PREMIER
It is with great pleasure that I welcome all
participants and supporters to the Western Cape
for the 2019 Absa Cape Epic. Over the past 15
years, the Absa Cape Epic has grown from 550
riders in 2004, to 1 300 riders taking up the
challenge in 2019. They will traverse some of
the toughest yet most spectacular terrain the
Western Cape has to off er. As a government,
we are proud to be associated with the event
and privileged to help host it in our continued
eff ort to position the Western Cape as a desirable destination for
sports tourism. As the largest full-service mountain bike stage
race in the world, the Absa Cape Epic allows visitors the chance to
enjoy the amazing highlights of our beautiful city and province. The
event has also become known for raising money for charity and
social development, as well as its commitment to mountain-biking
development and transformation through sport. We remain grateful
to the organisers, sponsors and participants for their contribution to
community upliftment in the region. The display of sportsmanship
during the gruelling race also provides positive role models to our
youth. We wish you all the best for the challenge ahead.
