It started with a few one- and two-day events, like the Houw Hoek Tour, Greyton Tour, Tiletoria Elgin Valley MTB and Stanford MTB Tour, then progressed to the fantastic Wines2Whales. Besides the small customary prize of a great post-training- 140 | MTB | island style ride coff ee, to get 50km or so under my belt each time made me feel like I was actually doing something good for myself and my body. I’d never ridden any mountain bike routes or events outside South Africa, so when I heard about the Colin Mayer Tour (CMT) – a newish three-day MTB tour in Mauritius – the thought of riding in some of the mountains, forests and beaches of the island intrigued me. I’d already entered Wines2Whales, and the CMT was scheduled for three weeks prior, so I was up for a double challenge in October, which meant upping my training game.
