COMMITTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management ( RMB ) oversees the resorts , and is at the forefront of best-practise environmental management , working to protect and improve the resorts ’ landscapes , so generations to come can enjoy the benefits and wonders of a healthy alpine environment . The RMB has implemented a range of project management systems that support native flora and fauna , control pest animals and plants , conserve resources , and promote renewable energy use , recycling , composting and other forms of waste reduction .
MOUNTAIN PYGMY-POSSUM RECOVERY PLAN
Mt Buller is home to a precious population of endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums Burramys parvus , a unique Australian species . These tiny creatures , that fit in the palm of your hand , live in boulder-fields alongside the ski runs of Mt Buller . They hibernate throughout winter buried deep under the snow and emerge in spring to breed . The population declined markedly due to habitat fragmentation and predation until an innovative and highly successful award-winning Recovery Plan was implemented . The species is now thriving , and the future looks bright for Australia ’ s only native alpine mammal .
MT STIRLING – RENEWABLE ENERGY
In a first for an Australian Alpine Resort , a sustainable and environmentally-sound micro-hydroelectricity system has been installed at Mt Stirling . Drawing energy from the creeks adjacent to the hub of Telephone Box Junction , the system will generate sufficient energy to meet the needs of businesses on Mt Stirling including the café , public facilities , ski patrol and resort management .
THE LIVING BIN ORGANICS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Mt Buller continues to lead the way with innovative recycling programs . The introduction of a pioneering organics management program sees on-mountain operators separate out organic waste ( fruit , vegetables and meat ), which is collected and recycled into compost using an onsite closed loop composting unit . In winter alone the system removes more than 30 tonnes of food waste , helping to combat the effects of climate change in a highly susceptible environment .
DON ’ T WASTE MT STIRLING
Resort Management has introduced an innovative waste management project that aims to reduce littering in remote locations on Mt Stirling . Visitors to Mt Stirling are given the opportunity to participate in the project through the use of a Waste Kit . Building on the ethic of carry in carry out and leave no trace , the Waste Kit will assist visitors with effective separation of waste streams whilst visiting and ensure our unique alpine environment remains waste free .
