WALKING
and HIKING
WALK
HIKE
We often hear people comment on the things they notice
when they slow down, and take the time to observe their
surrounds. The exquisite beauty of a perfectly formed
spider’s web, or the intricacy of a lattice of leaf veins. The
gnarled and twisted limbs of ancient snow gums striped
and streaked with colour, or the delicate petals of an
alpine everlasting daisy.
If you’ve been told to take a hike, we can tell you exactly
where to go! Grab your pack, load up with trail mix, throw
in your tent and head for the hills. From half-day walks to
multi-day adventures, the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling alpine
resorts and the surrounding areas have plenty of options
to suit hikers of all levels. You might find yourself climbing
craggy mountain peaks across rocky alpine scree, striding
along rambling ridge-lines or simply strolling ferny glades
in dappled sunlight.
Exploring on two feet is a great way to discover the
secrets of the High Country. Why not take a sunset stroll
through alpine wildflower meadows to the Mt Buller
summit where the setting sun casts a golden glow across
the mountains, or head below the snowline, criss-crossing
creeks to discover a tumbling waterfall along a steep
rocky gorge?
Interpretive Trails
Learning more about your surroundings can enhance
your walking experience. On Mt Buller and Mt Stirling
a number of interpretive signs are positioned along the
trails, describing in detail the flora and fauna that make
up the stunning environment. On Mt Stirling the journey
is enlivened with tales of the mountain’s history, from the
olden days of logging, the ‘Man From Snowy River’ movie
set and the characters that create the past and present.

For those planning an extended trip overnight options
including camping or taking residence in one of the
historic mountain huts for the night. Under a blanket of
stars, as the billy comes to the boil, the majesty of the
Australian sky at night reminds us of our place in the
universe. Civilisation feels a long way away.
