Highlights By Herlina Widodo 1st week 2nd week 3rd week 4th week A s many students already know, Mountainview is currently building a swimming pool in campus. The pool will be located behind the dormitory, next to the soccer field and the small gym. The purpose of the pool is to expand school facilities and to improve Mountainview. When it is finished, the entire school community, including parents and staff, will be free to use it (however, it will not be open for public). The idea first came from Mr. McGavran and his experience working in a Kenyan school that had a swimming pool. After getting approval from the school board, the school hired a contractor and has been overseeing the construction of the pool, which began on December 12, 2013. It is roughly close to ten percent done at the time of writing. The workers are currently building the superstructure, according to Mr. McGavran. He believes that the superstructure is the hardest part to build, since it involves the process of cementing and putting rebars. If the rebarring process goes wrong, they need to break it down and start all over. On the other hand, one of the builders said that the hardest process is moving the rebars into the pool. The cementing and rebarring processes are expected to be done in four to six weeks. By Sun Jin Lee Late at night on February 13, Mt. Kelud erupted on East Java island. It affected many cities around the mountain and even cities that are far away from Mt. Kelud. Flights were cancelled and six airports were closed because of low visibility. The ash and sand from Mt. Kelud reached MICS which was completely covered with ash. As a result, many teachers gathered in the early morning on 14th to discuss whether to open school or not. Teachers decided that school should be closed for safety and encouraged students to stay at home. MICS was closed until the 17th and was opened again on the 18th. Due to the volcano eruption, MICS had to delay the events for Elementary travel day and Valentine's Day. Basketball games prior to IISSAC were also cancelled. MICS resumed the schedule on February 18 and celebrated travel day and late Valentine’s Day. Juniors delivered fudges and roses to students for late Valentine’s Day. Because of elementary school events, high school students were dismissed early at 12:15. On February 19, students in MICS resumed its normal schedule. 4
