Fancy a crack at Classic Reliability Trialling?
I
once entered the Edinburgh Trial in an almost standard MkII Golf GTI 16v. You don’t
need any fancy race licences but you do need to join the Motorcycling Club (£35.00)
and take out their insurance cover for the day (£20.00 for Class O, I think). Entry
fees for the Exeter Trial in 2014 are set at a very reasonable £59.00. But beware, the
warm bonhomie of MCC’s events keeps its membership healthy and starting lists
full, so get your entries in early.
Like most successful trails cars our three Morgans had been tweaked for the
rigours of this type of motorsport over a number of years; being four-seaters they
also have the added advantage of allowing navigators to get in the back to ‘bounce’ and
add traction. Triallists generally raise their car’s ride height, through a variety of mods
and bodges, and a sturdy sump guards is a must. On our GTI we tried to increase ground
clearance with cheap rubber spring assisters originally designed for caravanners. Given
more preparation time we probably would have sourced some bigger springs or raised the
spring seat somehow. Some cars have sump guards that can be bought off the shelf; we had
to get a local engineering firm to knock up something from 5mm aluminium plate. Once
you’ve sorted those two things, and squirreled aboard few bits of basic safety equipment,
