While the opened mouthed petrolheads drooled at the priceless racers, the kids got more excited by the monster trucks, JCB Dancing Diggers and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the star of the 1968 film and recently added to Evans’ personal collection. There was also plenty of action in the skies above: stunt planes, gliders firing fireworks, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the impossibly agile RAF Chinook display team. Despite his boundless joie de vivre, Evans wasn’t afraid to ask the ‘Big Question’; the kind of question that has divided Britain’s greatest thinkers for centuries: ‘What is best: cakes or pies?’ After fierce debate the sweet-tooths eventually won it with a Lemon and Passionfruit Crunch Cake - personally, I think the Squirrel, Pigeon and Rabbit Hedgerow Pie was robbed. As champions of cars, music, pies and cakes we at MotorPunk salute Mr. Evans and his CarFest team; they’ve created a family-friendly and quintessentially British event which still feels intimate despite its size. It’s also set to raise £1.5million for charity. We’ll definitely see you there next year ... somewhere in the Wurzels’ mosh pit, hopefully. 51
