Alberto was able to speak with the family who lived
in the house and explained that we were travellers
and needed a place to camp for the evening. The
family was so generous they offered us a room in
the house, but we were happy to stay in our tent.
They were surprised and impressed at the speed at
which we were able to get our tent up and the lady
of the house was jealous of our camping stove
because it boiled up water really fast. We made
some tea and watched them round up their animals
and rotate the horses and donkeys in the field. Later
in the evening the lady of the house brought us
over some dinner, it was unexpected but a
delightful surprise. A huge bowl each of delicious
soup and fresh choclo (corn). As we fell asleep we
could their their guinea pigs squealing. The people
in the Sierra are so amazing and friendly, we are
truly grateful.
You can almost point at any mountain range you
want and there is probably a road that is going to
take you somewhere. Get off the beaten track and
explore the small towns. Talk to the local people
and ask for directions, you will learn things you
cannot from a map or GPS unit. There are many
places waiting to be visited.
