For those who have not heard of Rod Shaw and his films , I would advise you to seek out his YouTube video series under the title of Shaw2Shore . Rob is what I would term a semi-pro videographer who put together a superb series of movie shorts of his trip with his friend around Europe a few years ago . This year , Rob presented part of his new movie telling the story of his trip with 4 others around the Moroccan Sahara . Rod is an ex-Army officer and as such is a good presenter with a very humorous slant on what he shows and how he tells it . Rods presentations presentations were packed to the rafters for both showings .
I had not been to see Grant Johnsons workshop on changing tyres and fixing punctures , but I have heard from many people that it was a must do at any HUBB event . I think pretty much everyone else had the same idea , because the workshop itself was beyond standing room only levels of capacity . Being 6ft 4inch in my bare socks had its advantages as I could see over everyone else . Grants approach to the workshop was friendly , participatory ( he wanted to hear from the people in the audience ) and interactive . Grant went through the tools he personally used ( some of which were older than a number of the people in the audience ) and others which would do the same thing . He reiterated that anyone can change the tyre off a bike – tubed or tubeless – as it does not require great effort or strength , in fact he pointed out that if you were exerting great effort you were clearly doing it wrong . I came away from the workshop re-evaluating my approach to tyre changing and also to check out the Horizons Unlimited DVD on tyre changing and puncture repairs ( a review of which will be in a future edition of MEM ).
The presentations , for the most part , started at 9am and finished around 8-9pm with ample time throughout the day to get refreshments and an hour for lunch . At these events , it isn ’ t only the presentations and workshops you come for , there is also the socialising with the other attendees . I often sacrifice some time watching presentations for a wander around the campsites checking out other people ’ s setups ( bikes , 4x4s , tents , etc .) and to discuss their reasons for attending . For the most part , people had a desire to travel either around the world or to a certain remote area and although it was unlikely they would ever do the trip , they still wanted to feed their desires by living vicariously by watching the presentations of others .
