Miquel Silvestre, the Spanish maestro himself
is a global rider with wonderful insight into
human nature. He does a lot in English but it’s
worth learning Spanish just to read his stuff!
Miquel has opted for the Transfagaran
highway. TopGear had a pop and this one (and
many others) and thought it better than
Stelvio. But then that’s in a car and more about
how fast you can do something rather than
what else the journey has to offer.
This pass has a great deal to offer and of
course it makes a great sticker addition for the
pannier. A military road that was made with
great cost to human life about fears of
invasion and how quickly the Romanian army
could move supplies. What we have today is a
fantastic tarmac play ground for grownups
(kind of). It runs for around 90km between
Sibiu to Pitesti both have a lot to offer for the
discerning rider and their camera. Having a
wealth of monuments, old churches and
museums for you to visit.
Rather than just being a spectacular road to
ride on with amazing views of the mountains
there are also a few must stops to be had. The
top ones being the Vidaru Dam, the cable car
from Balea passed the waterfall (open in
winter I’m told) and of course Cetatea
Poienari. Along the ride there are plenty of
restaurants and hotels and even the odd
camping spot if you feel so inclined.
