Your Rights, Don't Sell Them

Hi Riders,

I deal with a lot of riders that like to tell a tale! But do they know their rights when getting into the writing game… not so much.

If you get paid for a story then that does NOT mean the publishing house now owns your rights, unless you sell them to them! The basis for small magazines, and motorcycles are small magazines in the players game, trust me! Then in the UK you may get £150 - £250 for a story. Better than a kick in the teeth but if you have spent a year on this then the ave wage in the UK is around £25,000 (includes London). What most editors wil want and I think is fair for £250 is an original story that has not been run in a UK magazine before. Mags tend to cycle around 2 years anyway and there are always stories. You can still opt to give or try and sell re-run work of course but Editors will be pickier. Re-running work is good if you’re an author looking to swap content for some marketing in a magazine.

But unless you have a written contract that explains that you’re selling all your rights to your work then what you are in essence doing is allowing a single run license. All rights remain yours! The same goes with pictures and take care that you understand that the publisher can use your pictures but they remain yours. If they want exclusive rights then you should be expecting a LOT more money for your work as you can never use that again, you’ve sold it.

You can look all this up on the NUJ (national union of journalists) that will show options for freelance work in various aspects of publications.

So once again, I humbly thank the contributors to this magazine for their talent and hard work.

Enjoy issue 16

James
