Beyond Germany we entered, what was for us, mostly uncharted
territory through this series of former Eastern-Bloc countries.
We were travelling with little preparation and consequently low
expectations, sort of making it up as we went along regarding
where to stop and what to see. The surprises that unfolded in
this early stage of the ride were all the more magnificent for
this, from wandering fairytale streets of Prague, migrating into
the mountain vastness of Slovakia and on to the plains of
Hungary. Then Romania with days of scratching in brilliant
sunshine along backroads and up-and-over mountain passes
including the infamous Transfăgărășan with ‘wow-wow-wow’
views in all directions. Throw into the mix a healthy jollop of
brilliant cuisine with beers and wines to match and we were half
way to Nirvana.
