We only stopped for a few minutes to quickly take in the scale of the building and to ponder briefly
how it had come to be built in the first place and what might have been. After that we rode on for a
few more kilometres before pulling into the sloping car park of the Deelen Airbase museum which
turned out to be an absolute gem! Although the building looked quite small and innocuous from the
outside it was absolutely packed with artefacts and pictures which told the story of the German
occupation and use of the Deelen Airbase throughout the Second World War. To top it all there was
also free coffee and free cake! Brilliant!
We had to be in place on the John Frost Bridge in time for the official City of Arnhem
Commemorations starting at 6pm. So after a fascinating hour or so at the museum we were back on
the bikes following Roelof right into the centre of Arnhem where Roelof had arranged that we could
park in one of the city council’s secure underground car parks – top result just a couple of hundred
metres from the bridge itself.
