FRANCE A t the French border we’re charged 25 euro’s for our passage, a small price to pay for such a pretty journey. The driving immediately improves as we cross the border, cars no longer tailgate at 18 inches and 90 mph, like a high speed freight train. Off at Cannes and through a bewildering one-way maze, before it spits us out on the way to Grasse. We haul up at our destination of Pegomas in the ever increasing midday heat, we’re early but nonetheless welcome, so we change out of our sweaty clothes and head into town for lunch. Following our time honoured plan of looking for a busy restaurant, on the basis that the locals know something we don’t, we settle on a sleek brassierie and seafood brochettes. 100 euro’s later, we’re slightly stunned at the cost for 2 beers each and a fish kebab…but it WAS very tasty. We head back to the digs for an afternoon nap in the sun. have the one then….back to town for a steak frites supper and we wobble back to the Hotel. Next day we’re luggage free, having settled here for a few days, so after a light refreshing breakfast it’s off in the increasing gloom to the Gorge du Verdun. Thunder speckles the sky as we wind, and I do mean wind, our way out of town and thread towards the highway proper. Reaching up and up as we twist left and right, then seemingly endle
