It depends who is being quoted and why, but putting words in people’s mouths is more interesting than reading them secondhand. And don’t worry about getting every last word correct; if you’re quoting a shopkeeper from Bolivia who said something hilarious or profound, you can ad lib a little for the purposes of artistic flair!
