A
s we rode past the entrance to the golf
course we saw some golfing fanatics whom I
thought must surely be in their element. The
Gary Player Golf Course is designed by the
legend himself and is one of the very best golfing
courses in South Africa and one of two at Sun City.
Hosting the Nedbank Million Dollar Golf
Challenge every year it offers: devastating
bunkers, well thought out water hazards and
blind pins. The fairways are immaculate. The two
courses can be enjoyed by all and although it may
be tougher for amateurs they would be sure to
take much experience from here.
Having parked up it was time to cool off, get re-
hydrated and explore. Inside we encountered
another bronze statue - this one a group of life
sized giraffe. Outside again, as we walked over
the Bridge of Time to the Valley of the Waves
great stone elephant guardians looked down on
us, as well as an enormous rock carved cheetah
and other animals lounging from their vantage
point above us. Every hour this bridge vibrates
causing 'eruptions' of sound and smoke. The
monkey fountain at the end of the bridge and
enormous doors fit in wonderfully with the lost
civilization theme. At the Valley of the Waves the
man made beach has a lagoon with a wave
machine capable of generating 1.8 metre waves
every 90 seconds. One of the five exhilarating
flume rides is the Temple of Courage which has a
scary 17 meter drop down a chute and under a
bridge before splashing into a pool at the foot of
the slide. Sun City was originally developed by
Sol Kerzner in 1979, long before he moved on to
develop international resorts like Atlantis in the
Bahamas.
After exploring and before our return ride there
was one last thing to do here......enjoy a
wonderful Mediterranean lunch at the Santorini
a chance to plan our
next weekend adventure!
