Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein Ages 9-12 This is a collection of poems and drawings that are outrageously funny and profound about an imaginative other world . Within its pages , you ’ ll meet a boy who turns into a TV set , and a girl who eats a whale . The Unicorn and the Bloath live there , and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out . It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens , a place where shoes fly , sisters are auctioned off , and crocodiles go to the dentist . The author couples the use of rhyme and nonsense verse with constant humor . His simple pen-and-ink drawings add to the imagery presented in each poem . Some poems not only depict an array of humorous characters , but also create touching moments and offer good advice .

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendack Ages 4 and up This classic picture book has become one of the most highly acclaimed and best-loved children ’ s books of all time . The book nicely balances a child ’ s need for imaginative thinking with a sense of limits , and the pleasures of home . The illustrations clearly make this book great , because they provide a launch pad for this imaginary place . Children can really identify with Max and his thoughts . When he is sent to his room for misbehavior , his imagination helps him to run away to where the wild things are and collect his thoughts . Ruling the wild things helps Max understand that he just wants to feel loved , and helps parents to keep in mind that such outbursts from children are generally cries for attention — for someone to love them best of all .
