As the young lady went to take some medication her friend inquired what it was like to have Lupus and be sick. She had went to the Dr appointments, watched her walk with a cane, seen her throw up in bathrooms and cry from Pain, the young lady assumed her friend knew. The young lady tried to ramble about pills, and the diagnosis but her friends was not happy with the answers. She wondered how she was going to be able to answer a questions she was never able to answer herself. She quicly grabbed every spoon on the table, and even the tables nearby. She handed the sppons to her friend and said here now you have Lupus. Her friend was puzzeld so she started to explain. Most people start off the day with endless possibilites and energy to do whatever they decide. She asked her friend to count the spoons, she coutned 12. The young lady stated this does not gurantee you will make it through the day or through your tasks with your 12 spoons only letting you know how many you start with. She asked her friend to list the tasks she performed this morning, even the simple ones. As her friend named the tasks, the young lady would remove spoons. Crawling out of bed; 1 Spoon, Taking a Shower; 1 Spoon, Getting Dressed; 1 Spoon. Her friend quickly ran out of spoons. her friend stated, “but I want more spoons.” The young lady explained. Thats not the way it works with Lupus. You only get a limited amount of spoons and once they are gone, you are done for the day and try again tomorrow. Some days you have more spoons than other, but its learning to live life, always keeping a spare spoon in your pocket. © Christine Miserandino This is a consolidated version of the creator of th Spoon Theories Story.
