g « C ’ est là que l ’ adrénaline monte , explique le Dr Phil . Je me soucie non seulement d ’ être un bon médecin , mais aussi un bon chirurgien en salle d ’ opération . Il faut prendre le temps de définir le meilleur plan d ’ attaque pour aider le patient . »
Il est 10 h 30 , et le Dr Phil est en salle d ’ opération depuis près de deux heures . Sous la supervision de la Dre Gill , il a pu procéder à l ’ intervention comme prévu .
« Il y a un processus de rétroaction à 360 degrés dans l ’ enseignement et l ’ apprentissage , dit le Dr Phil . J ’ enseigne aux étudiants en médecine , mais j ’ ai aussi des mentors qui m ’ inspirent et que je souhaite émuler . Pendant les rotations , les chirurgiens sont là pour nous enseigner les pratiques de haut niveau . Je finirai moi-même par avoir un poste de chirurgien , et je devrai travailler sans supervision . »
À 11 h , le Dr Phil a eu le temps d ’ enseigner , de soigner des patients et d ’ opérer . Entre les interventions , il a décidé de retourner au service pour voir si le personnel a besoin de lui .
« J ’ aime voir mes patients entre les opérations . Aujourd ’ hui , cette dame sera transférée dans un centre de réadaptation . Elle se posait certaines questions , et j ’ ai pris le temps de lui expliquer ce qui se produira après son départ de l ’ hôpital . »
C ’ est l ’ heure du dîner , et le Dr Phil doit retourner au bloc opératoire , mais pas avant d ' avoir avalé quelques bouchées ! g
10 h 30 10:30 a . m .
11 h 11 a . m . g “ At that point , the adrenaline hits ,” explains Dr . Phil . “ I not only have to worry about being a good doctor , but also a good surgeon in the OR . It ’ s all about taking the time to define the best plan of attack to help the patient .”
It ’ s 10:30 a . m . and Dr . Phil has been in the OR for almost two hours . Under the supervision of Dr . Gill , he ’ s been able to perform the surgery as planned .
“ There ’ s a 360 degree process when it comes to teaching and learning ,” says Dr . Phil . “ I teach the medical students , but I also have mentors that I look up to and want to emulate . When you ’ re on rotation , the staff surgeons are there to teach you the high level practices . Eventually , I will be a staff surgeon myself and will be expected to do this on my own .”
By 11 a . m . Dr . Phil has had time to teach , treat patients and perform a surgery . In between procedures , he ’ s decided to head back to the ward to see if the staff needs his help .
“ I like to see my patients in between surgeries . Today , this lady will be transferred to a rehabilitation centre . Since she had some questions , I took the time to explain to her what ’ ll happen after she leaves the hospital .”
It ’ s lunch time , but Dr . Phil has to go back to the OR . A quick bite is mandatory before another challenging surgery ! g
