g Puisque le Dr Phil effectue une résidence en chirurgie , la majorité de ses patients se rétablissent d ’ une opération ou sont en attente d ’ une intervention . À mesure que leur situation s ’ améliore , il s ’ efforce de les préparer lentement , mais efficacement , à leur congé .
« Nous travaillons en étroite collaboration avec nos collègues infirmières , physiothérapeutes et ergothérapeutes afin qu ’ ils puissent nous aider à déterminer si le patient est en sécurité pour rentrer chez lui . Une infirmière de liaison nous aide aussi à coordonner les soins ambulatoires offerts par le CLSC . »
À 8 h 30 , le Dr Phil sait qu ’ il est temps de se rendre en salle d ’ opération . Selon les cas , il passera de une à cinq heures à opérer chaque patient .
Ses étudiants en médecine le suivent toute la journée . À titre de résident « senior », le docteur Phil a le mandat de les exposer au bloc opératoire . Ils auront également l ’ occasion de l ’ assister pendant les opérations .
Il est 8 h 45 et l ’ opération doit commencer dans 15 minutes . Le Dr Phil s ’ assoit avec la Dre Heather Gill , professeure adjointe à la division de chirurgie vasculaire du CUSM , pour discuter du cas imminent . Le patient qu ’ ils vont opérer a des problèmes de circulation dans la partie inférieure de la jambe . Il faut débloquer l ’ une de ses artères et rétablir la circulation dans son pied . g
8 h 30 8:30 a . m . g Because Dr . Phil is completing a residency in general surgery , the majority of his patients are either recovering from surgery or waiting for an intervention . As their condition improves , his goal is to slowly and efficiently get them ready for discharge .
“ We work closely with our colleagues in nursing , physiotherapy and occupational therapy , so that they can help us determine if the patient is safe enough to go home . There ’ s also a liaison nurse who helps us arrange for outpatient care by the CLSC .”
By 8:30 a . m ., Dr . Phil knows it ’ s time to head to the operating room ( OR ). Depending on the cases , he ’ ll spend between one to five hours operating on each patient .
His medical students follow him through the day . As a senior resident , Dr . Phil has the mandate to expose them to the OR . It ’ s also an opportunity for them to assist him during the operations .
It ’ s 8:45 a . m . and surgery will begin in 15 minutes . Dr . Phil sits down with Dr . Heather Gill , assistant professor in the division of Vascular Surgery at the MUHC , to discuss the case they ’ re about to see . The patient they will operate on has problems with the blood supply to his lower leg . They need to unblock one of his arteries and restore the blood flow to his foot . g
