Il faut quatre ans de travail acharné , de longues nuits d ’ étude et d ’ innombrables heures à vivre et à respirer la médecine avant qu ’ un étudiant puisse se faire appeler docteur . Cependant , le parcours nécessaire pour acquérir un permis d ’ exercice complet n ’ est qu ’ un début ; il faut ensuite faire sa « résidence ».
En médecine , la résidence est un programme d ’ au moins trois ans . Le jeune médecin commence à soigner les patients sous la supervision du personnel hospitalier . La résidence est semblable à une formation d ’ apprenti : les médecins gagnent de l ’ expérience en travaillant .
Le Dr Phil Vourtzoumis est à sa troisième année de résidence en chirurgie générale au Centre universitaire de santé McGill ( CUSM ). Ses tâches quotidiennes sont variées ; en effet , il rencontre des patients hospitalisés , enseigne aux étudiants en médecine qui découvrent la dynamique de l ’ hôpital , et exécute des interventions au bloc opératoire .
« En général , mes journées commencent entre 6 h et 6 h 30 , explique le Dr Phil . C ’ est à ce moment-là que je fais ma tournée matinale à l ’ étage où séjournent nos patients hospitalisés . » g
It takes four years of hard work , long nights of studying , and countless hours of living and breathing medicine before a medical student can call themselves a doctor . However , the journey to earning a complete medical license is just the beginning ; it ’ s then time for a “ residency ”.
A residency is a training program that lasts a minimum of three years . At this point , the young doctor begins caring for patients under the supervision of hospital staff . A residency is like an apprenticeship ; doctors are learning on the job .
Dr . Phil Vourtzoumis is currently completing his third year of residency in General Surgery at the McGill University Health Centre ( MUHC ). As a senior resident , he has different day to day tasks that range from seeing patients on the ward , teaching medical students who are getting acquainted with the hospital dynamic , to performing surgeries in the operating room .
“ My days usually start between 6 a . m . or 6:30 a . m .,” explains Dr . Phil . “ That ’ s when I ’ ll do my morning rounds on the ward , which is where our inpatients stay .” g
