DOUCEUR ET FERMETÉ APRÈS L ’ OPÉRATION
« Notre professeur favori n ’ est pas nécessairement celui qui nous sourit , mais celui qui nous fait travailler et apprendre », croit l ’ infirmier Alejandro Ramirez , qui travaille à l ’ unité des transplantations de l ’ Hôpital Royal Victoria et qui a soigné le greffé Daniel Paradis . « Après l ’ opération , je dis aux patients que nous allons travailler ensemble à les guérir . Plus j ’ explique ce que je fais et pourquoi je le fais , plus ils se détendent et prennent confiance . Notre travail d ’ infirmier est inspirant parce que nous contribuons à un changement profond et positif dans la vie de nos patients et de leur famille . »
A LITTLE TOUGH LOVE FOR PATIENTS POST-SURGERY
“ Sometimes your favourite teacher isn ’ t the one who ’ s smiling at you , but the one who makes you work and learn ,” says Nurse Alejandro Ramirez , who works at the Transplantation Unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital and cared for transplant recipient Daniel Paradis . “ After surgery , I tell patients we are going to work together at recovery , and the more I explain what I ’ m doing and why , the more relaxed and confident they become . As nurses , our work is inspiring because we contribute to a profound and positive change in the lives of our patients and their family .”
g APRÈS LA TRANSPLANTATION , LA CONVALESCENCE
La transplantation a eu lieu le 25 août à l ’ Hôpital Royal Victoria . Le rein s ’ est tout de suite mis à fonctionner , et les analyses sanguines ont révélé une amélioration immédiate de la fonction rénale de Dan . À l ’ hôpital , il était sous les soins d ’ Alejandro Ramirez , que Daniel décrit comme un infirmier « fantastique et dévoué ».
« Alejandro entrait et me faisait marcher , même quand je n ’ en avais pas envie . Il était strict , mais compatissant , et il ne me laissait pas me sentir pitoyable . »
Malgré quelques moments difficiles , Daniel a vite reçu son congé et au bout d ’ à peine un mois , il a commencé à se sentir beaucoup mieux qu ’ avant l ’ opération .
« Avant la transplantation , je devais uriner toutes les 45 minutes , même la nuit . Pendant des années , mon sommeil en a gravement souffert , raconte Daniel . Après l ’ opération , ma qualité de vie s ’ est immédiatement améliorée . Je me réveillais reposé , et j ’ avais beaucoup plus d ’ énergie . »
Contre toute attente , l ’ opération s ’ est révélée beaucoup plus difficile pour Katherine . En général , la convalescence est plus facile pour le donneur , mais elle a souffert d ’ une importante hémorragie interne et a dû subir deux transfusions sanguines .
« J ’ éprouvais d ’ intenses douleurs , mais les infirmières de l ’ hôpital ont été merveilleuses . Si j ’ étais millionnaire , j ’ achèterais une voiture à chacune et une maison à Debbie . » g g AFTER A SUCCESSFUL TRANSPLANT , RECOVERY
The transplant was performed on Aug 25 at the Royal Victoria Hospital of the MUHC . The kidney started working right away , and blood tests showed an immediate improvement in Daniel ’ s kidney function . At the hospital he was under the care of a “ fantastic and dedicated ” nurse , Alejandro Ramirez .
“ Alejandro would come in and make me walk , even when I didn ’ t feel like walking . He was stern but compassionate and wouldn ’ t let me get away with being just miserable .”
In spite of a few difficult moments , Daniel was soon discharged and within a month started to feel much better than before the operation .
“ Before my transplant I had to urinate every 45 minutes , even during the night , so for years my sleep was severely affected ,” Daniel says . “ After the operation , my quality of life improved immediately ; I would wake up feeling rested and had much more energy .”
Unexpectedly , the operation was much more challenging for Katherine . Recovery is usually easier for the donor , but she had major internal bleeding and needed two blood transfusions .
“ I was in severe pain , but the nurses at the hospital were amazing to me . If I had all the money in the world , I would buy each of them a new car and I would buy Debbie a house .”
