g Une semaine après la naissance de Yanis , les infirmières de l ’ unité de soins intensifs néonatals ( USIN ) ont suggéré à Naminata de pratiquer la méthode kangourou avec son fils .
« La méthode kangourou , qui désigne le contact peau à peau , est bénéfique pour tous les bébés , explique Amanda Camacho , infirmière à l ’ USIN . L ’ USIN peut être un milieu stressant pour les bébés ; cette méthode les aide dans leur développement et leur apporte du réconfort . Elle favorise le lien et l ’ attachement entre les bébés et leurs parents , qui doivent vivre séparés pendant le séjour à l ’ USIN . »
Au CUSM , les soins liés au développement des bébés à l ’ USIN sont pris au sérieux . « Il y a certains problèmes de développement liés à l ’ environnement de l ’ unité , comme le son , l ’ éclairage et les diverses positions dans lesquelles on place les bébés . Nous tentons de trouver ce qui est le plus favorable pour qu ’ ils puissent se développer correctement pendant leur séjour à l ’ hôpital , déclare Amanda , qui fait partie d ’ un comité du CUSM pour optimiser les soins du développement . Par exemple , la population de bébés prématurés a besoin d ’ un milieu qui ressemble davantage à l ’ utérus , où règnent la noirceur et le silence , tandis que les bébés à terme ou plus âgés ont besoin de milieux plus stimulants . »
Le comité s ’ est vite rendu compte que ce contact peau à peau serait le moyen le plus simple et le plus efficace pour tenter d ’ améliorer le développement des bébés à l ’ USIN .
Avec la méthode kangourou , le bébé porte seulement sa couche , tandis que la mère ou le père retire sa chemise et revêt une jaquette d ’ hôpital ouverte à l ’ avant . Le parent dépose ensuite le bébé sur sa poitrine , s ’ enveloppe avec lui d ’ une couverture , puis ensemble , ils restent assis tranquillement pendant environ une heure . g

At the MUHC , developmental care of babies in the NICU is taken seriously . “ There are certain developmental issues regarding the environment we deal with in our unit , like the sound , lighting , different positions we place the babies . We try to find what is most favourable for them so they can develop properly while still being in a hospital ,” said
Amanda , who is on an MUHC committee to optimize developmental care . “ For example , the premature baby population requires an environment more like a womb , which is very dark and quiet and then we have term babies and older babies , who require more stimulating environments .”
Through the committee it became very apparent that this skin-to-skin care would be one of the easiest and most effective ways to try to improve the development of the NICU babies .
During Kangaroo Care , the baby is dressed in his / her diaper and then either the mom or dad removes their shirt and puts on a hospital gown that is open in the front . They then place their baby on their chest and wrap themselves up together while they sit quietly for about an hour . “ The benefits of Kangaroo Care are well documented ,” said
Amanda , who has written a protocol for Kangaroo Care at the MUHC that was published in December 2014 . “ One of the main ones is it stabilizes vital signs like body temperature . Moms and babies actually have a physical relationship where the mom ’ s body temperature will change to make the baby ’ s temperature appropriate ; so if the baby is cold the mom ’ s body will warm up .”
In addition to temperature , the other vital signs it regulates include respiration g g
