TRADITIONAL PASTIMES WITH
A TWIST HELP MOTIVATE KIDS
U
nless a child is enrolled in some
kind of physical activity or sport,
many tend to fall into a sedentary rut
made easier with all of the technology
available. These days, you’re more likely
to see kids holding digital devices than
skipping rope or a baseball glove. Games
that were made up of physical movement
and actual exertion are becoming more
and more antiquated on the playground
or in the backyard. Remember hopscotch,
tag, dodgeball and champ?
Of course, opposing video games all
together is a losing battle many parents
face. The good news is, not all video games
are bad. They provide specific goals, honing hand-eye coordination, and present
mental challenges. And because they consist of levels that increase difficulty, their
completion brings about feelings of accomplishment, success.

MOTIVER LES ENFANTS AVEC DES JEUX TRADITIONNELS,
AVEC UNE TOUCHE D’INNOVATION
Par | By Tina Kissavos

Using these elements—goals, competi-
tion, reward—there are five “old-school”
games with a twist, each one guaranteed
to get your child moving and having fun.
Pick Up Sticks:
Gathering various
items in a pile on
the floor, the goal is
to stand on one foot,
reach down to pick
up one item at a
time, and not fall or drop the other foot. Not
only are kids concentrating and working
on balance and flexibility, they’re strength-
ening their core and leg-stabilizer muscles.
Suggest they close their eyes while picking
up items. For an extra challenge, they must
use memory by guessing the items picked
up. Every wrong answer equals five push
ups, jumping jacks or burpees. Every right
answer gets a high five. gg
