Ali Zidel Meyers, the facilitator of Writing Your Cancer Journey recently reflected on Mal’s participation in the group: Mal left an indelible mark on our hearts. We all appreciated his curmudgeonly spirit, his kindness, and his lovely writing. Among other things, he valued community, art, and his glorious hair—which was a topic of his writing more than once. He also wrote about nature, memories, his beloved visits to the beach in San Francisco, and the moments in which he found peace and joy amid a solitary life. He never shied away from sharing his opinion or his unique voice, and his prose was as poetic as it was mellifluous.  I hope he is in peace now, and I am thankful to have had the chance to know and write with him. May Mal’s memory be a blessing. Mal’s brother, Gary Schoen, has generously contributed one of Mal’s pieces from the writing group (a letter to their mother) as well as the eulogy that he recently gave for Mal. We are honored to include Dear Mom, by Mal Schoen, and One Journey’s End by Gary Schoen, in this issue of Months To Years. We hope you will enjoy this current issue.
