COLOR AND CULTURE
At left, Kass stands in the doorway to her
richly colored dining room. The painting
behind the light fixture is another Day of the
Dead representation that she purchased on her
first trip to Mexico. “People either love it, or
they can’t get over it,” says Kass, who’s firmly in
the first category. “If you’re walking a crocodile
in the afterlife, that’s great!” The tablecloth
hails from Mexico, as does the $100 light
fixture made of mercury, glass and tin – hard to
transport, but worth the effort, she says.
Above, most of the furniture and accessories in the living room have been accumulated during Kass’ many years in Montclair.
“I don’t worry about mixing patterns, or
making sure that everything is the right color,”
she says. “If you love it, it will work – at least
for you.” She jokes about “sitting by the
windows, having coffee and watching kids
leave for fire drills.” At right, former owners
remodeled the bathroom, with its access to
the kitchen, shortly before she purchased the
house. The decorative mirror is an addition
purchased from Home Goods. ➤
