EAST END ART T he streets and lanes of the East End are filled with galleries and museums large and small. As the sum- mer season begins we have a number of early-season exhibitions you do not want to miss. GUILD HALL The most important museum in the area was founded in 1930 to ensure the public had access to the arts in all its various forms. From the beginning it has offered exhibitions of locally known as well as internationally re- nowned artists from all fields and disciplines. One of the most influential figures of the past 40 years, LAURIE ANDERSON is an avante-grade performer, mu- sician, painter and singer who helped define pop and performance art. This summer she brings an eye-opening new exhibit combining Virtual Reality, Video Performance and a series of ten new drawings to East Hampton’s Guild Hall. This unique opportunity to experience Laurie’s ge- nius is free to the public and runs June 2 - July 22. 158 Main Street - East Hampton - 631-324-4050 POLLOCK-KRASNER HOUSE AND STUDY CENTER He may have arrived a starving artist, hardly differ- ent from a hundred others trying to establish an identity here, but by the time he passed away in 1956 Jackson Pollock left a legacy few can ever imagine. While here he and his wife Lee Krasner lived in a small farmhouse over- looking Accabonac Harbor. There Pollock perfected the drip painting style that is his legacy. Amazingly, when the property was acquired traces of his work were left literally on the old barn floors and walls! Today that farmhouse is a National Historic Landmark, preserved as a teaching opportunity for artists and visi- tors who yearn to know more about this iconic figure and his methods. Open to the public Thursday - Saturday 1-5PM you can also reserve a place in their once-a-day guided tours held at noon each day by contacting them at www.pkhouse.org. They also features exhibitions by noted artists begin- ning this month with a wonderful exhibition of WORKS BY LOUIS SCHANKER. One of the most admired printmakers and muralists of the 20th century much of his work was cre- ated under the government’s WPA program in the 1930’s. Designed to support artists and enhance public spaces Schanker was a leading figure of that time. On exhibit from now till July 28 it is followed by THE PERMANENT COL- LECTION. Here works collected since the House’s open- ing in 1988 by a variety of contemporary artists are mixed with works by Pollack and Krasner to give the full feel of the influence and importance of 20th century art on its time and today’s work. On exhibition through October 27. 830 Fireplace Road - East Hampton - 631-324-4929 SOUTHAMPTON ARTS CENTER The newest addition to the public cultural scene celebrates its fourth season with a ground breaking series. “LIGHT ON SHADOW” is a sobering look at how the waters that sustain us and the life that depends upon them are facing extinction. Photographer and environ- mental activist Shawn Heinrich’s exquisite photographs bear powerful witness to this threat. Working with the Blue Sphere Foundation he has traveled the marine world collecting artistic evidence that cannot be ignored any- more. Co-creator of the Emmy-Award winning “Racing Extension” (which will be shown June 1) he and his work are on exhibition from now to July 16 Thursday-Sunday from noon - 6PM. Attendance is a must for anyone who loves life and this fragile planet. 25 Jobs Lane - Southampton - 631-283-0967 www.MontaukLife.com LEIBER GALLERY They died within hours of each of one another on April 30. She was 96 he 97. Although gone their legacy lives on at their East Hampton studio where many of their prints and bags are still open for public viewing every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday from 1-4PM. 446 Old Stone Hwy - East Hampton - 631-329-3288 This past month the art world lost two luminous figures when husband-and-wife Gerson and Ju- dith Leiber passed away. He was an award-winning print maker and painter who took his inspiration from the natural world that surrounds their East Hampton home. Translated through his cubist and expressionist sensibili- ties his prints are beautiful, enchanting, enthralling essays on life and its possibilities. Judith was throughout the 1960’s a sought after cre- ator of some of the most prized handbags in the world. Each was a hand-crafted piece of art. Whether inspired by ladybugs, peacocks, Buddha’s, vegetables or musical in- struments each small bag is a true work of work, intricately designed, embellished with layers of crystals and semi- precious stones they are objects that collectors crave and fashion conscious buyers simply cannot get enough of! WALLACE GALLERY One of East Hampton’s most respected gal- leries is located just off Main Street in the heart of the village. There Terry Wallace specializes in 19th and 20th century American art with a extensive catalogue of Peconic Bay Impressionists and regionally important painters. His book on C. Hjalmar Amundsen, better known as “Cappy” is considered the standard on that well-regarded nautical artist. 37A Main Street - East Hampton - 631-329-4516 Th e Marriage of e Marriage True Minds Th e Th Marriage of of Th e Marriage True of True Minds Minds Remembered True Minds Remembered Remembered Remembered Photo: Heritage Auction Photo: Gary Mamay Photo: Gary Mamay This year the Leiber Collection will offer a unique celebratory exhibition of artful handbags by Judith Leiber and modernist paintings by Gerson Leiber.
