I encountered this book years ago when I was working with AmeriCorps for Literacy and Math. The book is beautifully illustrated with wood cuts that tell the story of Wilson Bentley, the first known photographer of snowflakes. One of my favorite parts of the book is the end where they show some of his remarkable photographs. What makes them even more beautiful is reading about his painstaking efforts that he took to make these images.
After reading the story, your children should begin to understand the wonder of snowflakes. The "there are no two alike" belief is easily translatable to life, friends, etc. But rather than get philosophical on little ones, the craft you can pair with this book can also be a simple art project of creating your own snowflakes. I personally like doing "relief" paintings. Have your child find one of Bentley's snowflakes to copy (or just let them come up with their own design) and have them draw it with a white, silver or grey crayon. Then let them watercolor over top of their drawing to illuminate their beautiful design!
