2 • The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce
On December 12, 1867, thirteen men wearing beaver
hats met around a potbellied stove over the Fuller
grocery at Wyoming Avenue and Spruce Street in
downtown Scranton to form a Merchants Association.
Their goal was to encourage the economic growth
of the city and the county. That organization
evolved into the Scranton Board of Trade and
eventually became The Greater Scranton Chamber of
Commerce.
One hundred fifty years later we are still concerned
with the growth of the city. We’ve come a long way
from potbellied stoves and beaver hats, but our basic
purpose remains the same – our mission is to attract,
sustain and grow jobs.
You will be hearing much about The Chamber’s rich
history over the next several months. I do hope you
will join us as we celebrate our organization’s 150th
