What To Do After A Loved One Passes By Elizabeth Quigley, Community Affairs Carnes Funeral Home What’s Next? After a loved one passes away many people are left in a fog and do not know where to turn or what to do. Here are a few facts about funerals that will help you during a time of need: 1. After a death has occurred contact your local law enforcement if the death was unattended. 2. A coroner, JP or attending physician must make a determination of death. 3. Locate the deceased letter of direction, prepaid funeral contract or will. 4. If no direction exists, next of kin must determine disposition. 5. A report of death and a death certificate are legally required. Disposition options are: burial, cremation and donation. Funeral Homes are prohibited by law from contacting a family near or at the time of death. When you choose a funeral home they must give you a price list and a brochure stating your legal rights from The Texas Funeral Service Commission. MOMENTUM / Summer 2016 25
