All you need to enjoy a 6-foot gingerbread house this Christmas is thousands of gingerbread cookies , a couple hundred pounds of icing and more than a week to bake , assemble and decorate with about a hundred pounds of candy .
Or you could just take a few minutes to visit the lobby of South Shore Harbour Resort in League City .
That ’ s where Chef Roland Kyburz and his crew have created this year ’ s masterpiece for all to enjoy .

Kyburz has been building large-scale gingerbread houses in the greater Houston area for two decades now , beginning with one he built for former President George H . W . Bush .
“ The President enjoyed seeing them , and they became kind of a tradition that I brought with me to South Shore Harbour Resort some 15 years ago . Our hotel and restaurant guests love them , and it ’ s become a local tradition that local families stop in just to see them .”

His 2017 version of the Christmas classic will be on exhibit through the holiday season at South Shore Harbour Resort , 2500 South Shore Boulevard in League City .
Everybody ’ s welcome to come by to take pictures , he says . He particularly loves the expressions on children ’ s faces as they contemplate that much gingerbread , that much icing and that much candy all in one place .
“ Gingerbread houses go back a thousand years or more in my native Switzerland ,” Kyburz said . “ Immigrants brought them to America in the 1700s , and people have been enjoying them in the United States ever since .”
Chef Kyburz begins by baking gingerbread cookies in sheets and cutting them into circles before assembly and decorating . Everything in the house is edible – except for the wooden frame that helps bear the weight .
