assistant so to say. I started to coach those
same clients. They wanted more advice.
Although they were at a certain plateau in
their business and platform, they still were
seeking certain advice in terms of marketing, positioning, branding, their message
and that’s something I was really good at.
MMIA: You were recently featured on page
85 of Essence magazine. How were you able
to land a spread?
Lucinda: I’m very big on vision boards. Essence was something that was on my vision
board. It all takes process and positioning.
It wasn’t something that happened overnight. Just being ready for the opportunity at that moment. Because I did the work
they had something to look at in reference.
I was open to be vulnerable on who I am,
my transformation, and how I’m seeking
to help others. It allowed the process to be
a lot easier in terms of the Essence writer
pitching me to the rest of the team and just
having that approval to be in the magazine.
MMIA: Bes ides God, what are some of the
things you credit for your success?
Lucinda: I credit my success to my family;
my children, my husband, and especially
my mom. My mom had a great impact on
my success. She pushed me. She was my
naysayer. She was my opposing force because she knew that was going to make me
prove her wrong. She knew it’d give me the
fuel I needed to be successful.
MMIA: You’re a mom of three and wife.
How do you juggle your roles as a mom
and CEO?
Lucinda: I find a balance. I don’t pressure
myself. I know everything won’t get done.
I prioritize my tasks with the freedom of
knowing everything can’t happen at once.
I also keep a schedule and a routine. I plan
what I can get done while my kids are at
school and before my husband comes home.
MMIA: Every year you throw this mega
conference called Activate Conference.
How did Activate Conference get started?
Lucinda: I was doing mini-tours and workshops around the country and from that I
built a nice following of friends. People that
I’ve established and built relationships with,
not just ‘hey come to my event’. At the end
the women wanted to meet each other. And
it only made sense so that we could come together and network and talk about what we’ve
accomplished and just have a good time.
MMIA: What are you working on right
now besides Activate Conference?
Lucinda: Right now I’m doing the Activate
Your Vision Board tour. I’m working on my
platform Intensive, the media and positioning myself to have that Lucinda Cross Show.
We need that Activate show that highlights
these women on TV who’re doing positive
things; who’re busting their butts, making
it work. That’s what I’m working towards.
MMIA: What were some of the limiting beliefs that have held you back in the past and
how did you overcome them?
Lucinda: A lot of times I believed that no
one was going to pay me for a service, product, or a price that I put out there. A lot of it
was just valuing my work financially. How I
was able to overcome that by looking at the
high perceived value that I bring to the table
and making sure that I showed that value.
By showing a full inventory of everything
that I provide and what makes me different
and unique in what I do. That’s when I said
oh man I’ve been undercharging. And that
kinda really set me on fire. But I was also
able to overcome it because I was a broke
entrepreneur and I didn’t like feeling like
that. So it was either get a job or figure out a
way to make this work.
MMIA: What tips can you share with
women who are juggling their job and their
business?
Lucinda: Well first I’d tell them to become a
part of the Million Moms in Action movement because you provide them with the
best of the best of women who have done
it. Second, look at the position you’re in
now as a sponsor for your passion. When
I changed my mindset from ‘I hate my job,
I can’t wait till I get out of here, I can’t take
it another day’ to ‘These checks are fueling
my business and when I make my exit plan
the things I need financially will already
be taken care of ’. While you’re at your job
and making this transition start thinking
of the things you do need without worry
and without fear because everything else
will fall into place. Start networking right
now. Start figuring out ways you can make
money with what you desire to do when
you do leave. Start planning your escape;
Figure out what you need to have in your
backpack- some clients, your website created, business cards. Get all of those things in
place while you have your sponsor paying
you. You want to be able to make at least
double or triple your paycheck monthly before you leave. You’ll be working harder as
an entrepreneur, but at least you’re working
on something you love to do and you’re getting paid to do it..
