I actively involve my children in every step of my journey even if it’s something as simple as helping me to stuff swag bags for a conference I’m hosting. And I reinforce to them on a daily basis that my work as an entrepreneur is not about me... It’s about being a role model to them for what it looks like to discover what you love to do and to fearlessly nurture your possibilities, to create a legacy that will long outlive your physical body, and to selflessly serve and help create transformation in the lives of others. My entrepreneurial journey has made such an impact on my children that my daughter wrote her first book in 2013 at the age of 9 years old. Now, at 10 years old she is already on the speaking circuit. I couldn’t be more proud! MMIA: Does your husband/mate support you and your business? Cheryl: Absolutely. My husband is my rock in business! He supports my journey, reminds me that it’s not supposed to be easy when things get tough, encourages me, and uplifts me. And it’s truly a blessing because when he married me I wasn’t an entrepreneur... I was a 9-to-5 corporate girl. But he has lovingly embraced my life as an entrepreneur with an oftentimes sporadic, hectic, chaotic schedule that’s not always consistent. He rolls with the punches without complaining. His support is priceless! MMIA: What advice can you give to the woman who is reading this right now and thinking there’s no way she can while running her household? Cheryl: It might sound like a cliché but you can accomplish anything you set your mind to do but you have to be “hungry” for it. You can’t expect to do things the normal, easy, or comfortable way. After all, comfort and greatness don’t reside on the same street. You have to be willing to make the sacrifices that others won’t to create the reality that others will only dream about. T hat might mean getting up to work while other people are still under the covers, going to bed in the wee hours of the morning after everyone else is already sound asleep, writing pages to your book while other people are watching Basketball Wives, going to networking events when you really want to go home and sleep. IT IS ACHIEVABLE if you are willing to put in the work, invest the time, and make the sacrifices. Don’t give yourself permission to make excuses or get distracted. Get laser focused on what you want to accomplish, stick to a schedule, work harder than everyone else, and ask for help when you need it. And always remind yourself: that “while you’re creating excuses, somebody else is executing.” “You have to be willing to make the sacrifices that others won’t to create the reality that others will only dream about.” Cheryl Woods IG: @cherylempowers Twitter: @cherylempowers June 2014 | MMIA Magazine | 15
