MAKING MAKE-UP

KOSHER FOR SHABBAT AND YOM TOV MAKE-UP IS NOT ONLY
ACHIEVABLE, BUT MAGNIFICENT.

A KOSHER ALTERNATIVE
On one of her trips to the USA,
Peninah came across a range of
make-up in Baltimore that was
endorsed by many leading Rabbis
in the USA and has since been
certified by local South African
Rabbis, including Rabbi Kurtstag.
Each of Shaindee Cosmetics
products has been tested and
approved by either Rabbi Abraham
Blumenkrantz or Rabbi Moshe
Heinemann and is also kosher
le’Pesach. What makes Shaindee
Cosmetics products acceptable
according to these Rabbinic
authorities is that they don’t
contain red or black pigments that
would stain the skin. “I believe
that women should be able to look
and feel beautiful every day, but
especially on Shabbat and Yom
Tov,” says Peninah.
AS I walk into Peninah Cassel’s make-up studio,
I feel as if I have entered into a bubble of calmness.
Outside, the bustle and stresses of daily life continue,
but here Peninah has created an atmosphere of
tranquility where women can come to rejuvenate and
be pampered.
After 35 years of working in the entertainment
industry, Peninah decided about three months ago to

her new passion: kosher make-up. “Ever since I was a
young girl I have had a love for make-up, fashion and
being creative,” says Peninah. So it was only natural
that she would one day growup to become a renowned
make-up artist. She has travelled the globe applying
her artistic make-up skills for Top Billing, Style and
Lapelle magazine covers, Miss World Pageants and
Carte Blanche television shows, to name a few.
However, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein provided guidelines
of how women could still apply make-up on Shabbat and Yom Tov without contravening halacha. And
Shaindee make-up, applied within accordance to Rabbi
Moshe Feinstein’s guidelines, can meet these criteria.
THE OPPOSITE EFFECT
As a wife and mother, Peninah understands a woman’s
desire to want to always look her best. But as a
religious, Orthodox Jew, she didn’t want to
compromise Halacha to do so. Peninah is now an
expert in Shabbat make-up after having received
training during her many trips to Baltimore on the
correct use and application of Shabbat make-up.
“Applying Shabbat make-up is easy, but there are a
few fundamental rules that must be followed,” says
Peninah. “The skin must be dry and clean from any
