« ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK » IS A DESTINY
Sting ’ s song « Englishman in New York » became something of a cult overnight , while there are absolutely not so many of such songs nowadays . The purpose of this composition is not to identify differences between the British and the Americans , as many people think , but it is a call to remain oneself irrespective of external circumstances . It is not for nothing that the line “ Be yourself , no matter what they say ” is regularly repeated in the song ( Remain yourself regardless of what the others say ). And the main character in this case is not Sting , but Quentin Crisp , who was nicknamed in the homeland as « an idol of British gay culture ». The actors met each other while shooting the film « Bride » where Sting played the leading role . This picture did not bring him any success in acting career ; though this very film made him meet Quentin , who described very emotionally his life in the England of the 20s of the last century - where homosexuality was absolutely not accepted . And , by the way , it was 1986 . Soon , being under impression of the companion ’ s stories , Sting created the piece , which is now called « Englishman in New York ». This song immediately smashed to popular expressions and statuses in social networks .
